A little... about L. Pief
I was born in Toronto, grew up in Amsterdam and lived in Umbria, Italy for a couple of years before moving back to Canada in the mid nineties where I joined the International Cinematographers Guild IATSE 667. Since then I frequently went back and forth, working between Amsterdam and Toronto until in 2019 I settled in Grey County, Ontario where I have my portrait studio.
Being raised by stepfather Frans Weisz (film director) and mother Astrid Weyman (actor, editor, painter, poet) while immersed in the Dutch art scene, my hobby quickly became my profession. At a relatively young age, people (producers, directors, actors, musicians) started paying me to do photography for the purpose of promoting film, theater and music productions and I quickly gained practical, real-world experience in the entertainment industry. Along the way I discovered something crucial; that working with and photographing people, performers or not, is endlessly fascinating and fulfilling.
To me, home is being on a set with a family of beautiful misfits i.e. professional, skilled, passionately creative people, who are all working tremendously hard applying their talents and instinct to tell a story, our story in that moment. As far as my specific skill-set and job description goes, I create still images that are not merely an observation or registration but are narrative, without the support of dialogue, sound or music. Achieving this is my challenge, privilege and definitely my passion. I have never looked back and can't imagine a better way to live my (professional) life.
Presently I shoot with Nikon Z8 cameras and a full range of Nikkor lenses, equipment that enables me to work and move stealthily and respectfully and capture ultra high quality RAW images under the most challenging conditions. For gallery and portrait purposes, in studio or on location, I own a complete set of battery powered strobe heads and light modifiers.
Call or email me to inquire about what I can do for you. If what you need happens to be outside my range or I'm otherwise not available, I'll happily assist by pointing you in the right direction.
